Schneider National Announces a $5,000 Sign-on Bonus

North America’s largest truckload carrier, announced today it will offer a $5,000 sign-on bonus for experienced drivers and owner operators. Experienced new hires and owner operators will receive $1,400 after orientation and $300 each month for 12 months.

It’s a start, but not enough. They are saying that they want experienced drivers and owner ops. Freight is good now and they want a short term solution. They offer this signon bonus, but their rates are still ridiculously low.

$.86 per mile for solos (empty and loaded)
$.84 per mile for teams (empty and loaded)

There’s a mention of bonuses and fuel surcharge and other discounts on fuel, tires and maintenance. That $5000 signon bonus sounds good, but what about when that year is over. And $5000 doesn’t make up for a years worth of driving for cheap rates. It’s probably good for a company driver, but even then, after that year, you’re stuck back in the same slave wages.

I’m sure this is their short term fix, just in case rates or the economy take a downturn. Their not stuck paying higher wages or rates to owners. Maybe after the election everyone will realize the economy is here to stay and wages and rates will rise to actually attract quality people to drive.
