(KAAL) — A semi-truck driver is dead after stopping on a Minnesota road to help a driver pull a deer away from her car. He was walking back to his rig after helping the woman when a pick-up truck struck him.

Betsy Donovan, the owner of Northgate Driving School says if you need to pull over for a problem with your vehicle, get over as far as possible to protect yourself.

“People don’t get far enough off the shoulder. They think just getting on the shoulder is good enough. They need to drop two wheels off the shoulders in the grass.”

I wrote about this before. Most trucks, myself included, try and move over to the next lane. I’ll move over and a car will pass me on the right. Krazy. With all the cars on the side, I may not move every single time. If a car looks deserted and there’s a lot of traffic I may not move over, but I will keep an eye on it, just in case.

The shoulder is just dangerous. I still see people changing drivers on the shoulder instead of waiting till the next exit. But why people can’t stay on the road and not drive on the shoulder escapes me even more.
